Cast has supposedly been on since then. No follow-up documentation yet. Nobody\u2019s touching it.\u201d<br \/>\nEli shook his head violently.<br \/>\n\u201cTake it out.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWe\u2019re going to help you.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cTAKE IT OUT!\u201d<br \/>\nHis scream tore through the room.<br \/>\nMarcus caught his shoulder before he rolled from the bed.<br \/>\n\u201cEli!\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cTake it out! Take it out!\u201d<br \/>\nI grabbed his good hand.<br \/>\n\u201cLook at me.\u201d<br \/>\nHe couldn\u2019t.<br \/>\n\u201cEli, look at me.\u201d<br \/>\nHis terrified eyes finally found mine.<br \/>\n\u201cYou\u2019re in the hospital.\u201d<br \/>\nHe gasped for air.<br \/>\n\u201cYour mother isn\u2019t in this room.\u201d<br \/>\nHis breathing slowed slightly.<br \/>\n\u201cNobody is going to hurt you.\u201d<br \/>\nHis eyes moved back toward the X-ray.<br \/>\nThen he whispered something.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat did you say?\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThe key.\u201d<br \/>\nDaniel looked at me.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat key?\u201d<br \/>\nI bent closer.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat key, Eli?\u201d<br \/>\nHe stared at the metal shape inside his arm.<br \/>\n\u201cThat\u2019s where he put it.\u201d<br \/>\nEvery hair on my arms lifted.<br \/>\n\u201cWho put it there?\u201d<br \/>\nEli\u2019s mouth closed.<br \/>\nHe shook his head.<br \/>\nI didn\u2019t push him.<br \/>\nNot yet.<br \/>\nDaniel looked at the monitor again.<br \/>\n\u201cWe need to operate. said carefully, \u201cwhere are the security officers?\u201d<br \/>\nShe ignored the question.<br \/>\nHer eyes fixed on the operating-room doors.<br \/>\n\u201cYou shouldn\u2019t have asked him about the room.\u201d<br \/>\nClara stepped toward the nurses\u2019 station.<br \/>\nMartha noticed.<br \/>\n\u201cDon\u2019t.\u201d<br \/>\nI held up one hand.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat room?\u201d<br \/>\nMartha between us.<br \/>\nThen raised both hands.<br \/>\nSecurity grabbed her.<br \/>\nI looked down.<br \/>\nThe paper had been folded so many times the edges were almost white.<br \/>\nI picked it up.<br \/>\n\u201cSarah, gloves,\u201d Clara warned.<br \/>\nI pulled on a pair before unfolding it.<br \/>\nIt was a child\u2019s drawing.<br \/>\nCrayon.<br \/>\nBlack walls.<br \/>\nA staircase.<br \/>\nA square room.<br \/>\nOne tiny stick figure stood inside.<br \/>\nThe door had been colored completely red.<br \/>\nAnd beside the figure, drawn again and again until the paper had nearly torn, was a large silver key.<br \/>\nAt the bottom, in shaky children\u2019s handwriting, were four words:<br \/>\nHE KEEPS THE OTHERS HERE.<br \/>\nClara stopped breathing.<br \/>\nI looked at Martha.<br
