Following his acting career, Jones made a striking turn into politics. He made a run for Congress in 1988, in Georgia\u2019s Fourth Congressional District, and won before he was later reelected in 1990.<\/p>\n

Born Ben Lewis Jones on August 30, 1941, in Tarboro, North Carolina, Jones was the third of four sons. According to The Hollywood Reporter\u2019s account of his life and career, which references several past interviews and articles, he was raised in Portsmouth, Virginia, where his father, Buck, worked for the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad and his mother, Ila, the youngest of 13 children, was a homemaker.<\/p>\n

The family lived in a railroad section house near the docks. For years, their home reportedly had neither electricity nor indoor plumbing. At 16, Jones began what he later described as \u201cdrinking and drifting.\u201d<\/p>\n

Still, he graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Portsmouth in 1959 before attending East Carolina College for a year. He later studied radio, television, and motion pictures at the University of North Carolina (UNC).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI had found something I thought I was good at,\u201d he continued. \u201cSomething besides drinking.\u201d Jones acted in theater, attended UNC on and off, and made an early film appearance in \u201cKillers Three\u201d in 1968, starring Robert Walker Jr., Diane Varsi and Dick Clark. Then came the role that would define him: Jones landed \u201cThe Dukes of Hazzard,\u201d and suddenly, the mechanic from Hazzard County became a household name. Despite how popular the role grew to be, Jones\u2019 time on the show was not entirely smooth.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Jones Even Blended Politics and Acting Again<\/p>\n

The late actor later returned to a world he knew well \u2014 politics \u2014 but this time on-screen. In 1998, he appeared in Mike Nichols\u2019 \u201cPrimary Colors\u201d as Media Adviser Arlen Sporken. The film starred John Travolta as an Arkansas governor who goes on to become U.S. president.<\/p>\n

By then, Jones had already lived through a real-life political career of his own. Yet neither Congress nor television was the most dramatic turnaround of his life.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The Quiet Detail About Jones\u2019 Final Moments<\/p>\n

For all the extraordinary chapters in Jones\u2019 life \u2014 poverty, addiction, sobriety, TV fame, Congress and a decades-long connection to \u201cThe Dukes of Hazzard\u201d \u2014 his final moments were strikingly ordinary.<\/p>\n

And that is what makes the detail shared by Viator in her Facebook post feel so moving:<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was home resting in his favorite chair waiting for the Braves to come on and whoop the Yankees.\u201d<\/p>\n

It is a small image, but an unforgettable one: a man who had lived a famously eventful life simply relaxing at home and waiting for the game to start when his life ended.<\/p>\n

Jones Once Said He Drank 43,000 Beers Before Getting Sober<\/p>\n

Prior to his passing, Jones spoke openly about his battle with alcoholism and the frightening depths it reached. In a 2008 interview reported by Today, he estimated that over roughly 20 years he had consumed 43,000 beers and 2,000 jugs of whiskey, wine, gin and vodka, while also smoking pounds of marijuana.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d wake up in jails just wondering how I got there,\u201d Jones recalled. \u201cVomit on my shoes and blood on my shirt,\u201d he added. Jones said his life finally reached a breaking point on September 26, 1977. \u201cI really was literally dying and I knew it,\u201d he said. He described being caught in a five-week drinking binge and feeling what he called \u201cindescribable terror.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

What happened next almost sounds scripted. \u201cA year later,\u201d Jones said, \u201cI walked into an audition and was cast in what was to become one of the greatest television shows in the history of entertainment.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Jones\u2019 recovery also gave new meaning to one of the biggest moments of his political career. When he was sworn into Congress after his 1988 election, the experience overwhelmed him. \u201cThat all seemed dreamlike to me,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s when it hit me, what a blessing I had been given and I just started crying.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jones ultimately framed his entire life not around the times he stumbled, but around how he responded afterward.\u201dMy life is not a story about falling down,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s a story about getting up.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added that people could relate to alcoholism and the behavior surrounding it because he considered it a common disease.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

After news of Jones\u2019 death broke, his former \u201cDukes of Hazzard\u201d co-star Tom Wopat, who played Luke Duke alongside John Schneider\u2019s Bo Duke, was among the first cast members to pay tribute.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Dukes of Hazzard lost another integral part of their cast today,\u201d Wopat wrote on Facebook. \u201cBen Jones was a fine friend and a fierce advocate of all the best things we can offer in the entertainment business,\u201d he continued. \u201cHe will be sorely missed\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Wopat then shared a fond reference to the late Denver Pyle, who played Uncle Jesse: \u201cDenver Pyle frequently said to Ben, \u2018I\u2019m not your Uncle Jesse!\u2019 But I feel like we lost a Duke cousin today.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jones\u2019 Wife\u2019s Heartbreaking Final Tribute<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Viator\u200b\u200b closed her post by reflecting on how much life Jones had managed to pack into his 84 years. \u201cBen had the most amazing rich full life [sic],\u201d she wrote. \u201cHe loved and was loved by so many.\u201d<\/p>\n
